The allotment

Me and the Bio Gas man live in Holland. After he had suggested growing things that were useful we investigated getting an allotment or 'volkstuin' in theneighbourhood. A friend had one already and chances were there were some vacancies. In May 2006 we were fortunate enough to get our hands on a plot.

It was 10m by 14 m with no shed, a small fence and gate and a bit of wind break. there was a paved area that looked like a patio for sitting on and a box for storing some tools. In front of the paved area there was a cold frame with five old metal framed windows to keep out the weather.

The previous occupant, now moved to a plot with a shed, had left several fruit bushes including redcurrant, rhubarb and raspberry which was something to start with.

On our first visit the bio gas man and I stood and surveyed our land, proud and panicking as to what we should do next. On-line I ordered books and the BGM started digging. If in doubt dig seems a natural reaction when faced with sandy ground.
