When we first got our plot there was a big compost heap in the corner. The previous tenant of six years wan't sure how long it had been there and the local expert didn't know either. When we cleared it away a stump was discoverd that was about 30cm high. the stump appreciated the new space and light and sprouted the following year. We deduced that the mystery stump was a pear tree of some sort. It continued to grow tall enough that it was about 2 metres high. The following spring it managed three blossoms, each of which produced two or three pearlets which sadly dropped off within a few weeks. This year the tree was covered in blossom and now seems to be trying to bear fruit.
There are around 40 fruit in all and now I'm waiting for the fruit to turn down before we thin them further.
The tree itself has suffered somewhat from the odd caterpillar and some leaf disease so I'm not sure how optimistic to be about the harvest. The fact is though our miracle pear tree is still pretty impressive.
