We started by working out what we wanted to plant and where. this was helped massively by a book or two. There is a thing in vegetable gardening that requres crop rotation. In order to prevent diseases and bugs getting hold it's better not to grow the same thing in the same place so you rotate the crop position each year. We worked on having four areas then we could make sure crops weren't grown again in the same place for four years. there are some crops that don't have this problem or that need to stay in the same place for a while so they are separate. Here's what we ended up with. In the first year we had beans in area A, Cabbages in Area B, with carrots and onions in area c. We didn't stick to anything specific in area D. The fourth group is potatoes usually but we got the plot rather late so didn't have potatoes in the first year.
