The Wormery

We had a problem with our kitchen waste. Loads of it on a regular basis but we didn't want to loose the benefit for our allotment and we didn't want to store it in a negative (stinky) way in the kitchen. the popular solution seemed to be to have a wormery. Now my first instinct was to buy one. I'm a bit of a lightweight but the problem wasn't that easy to solve. We tried hard to buy one but such a thing didn't seem easy to find in The Netherlands. So we needed to make our own. This sounds impressive but was dead easy.

First we looked for instructions on the web.
Then we got three large plastic boxes that stacked together. We had to block off the handle areas to stop the worms from escaping. The top box and middle box needed holes in them so we made these with a drill and 0.5 cm drill bit approx. The top box holes were a free passage so the worms can move between the top two boxes but the middle box holes need a covering of mesh to stop the worms droppping into the bottom box. The bottom box is a collection area for this liquid that is generated by the worms. this liquid is fantastic liquid fertiliser.
The three box stack can be ready fairly quickly but it needs a lid. (We didn't realise how important that was in the beginning but you'll see why later.)
