June Veg

I keep intending to write in the present rather than the past but things keep getting in the way. Now the plot is looking really well. The potatoes are all thriving. We planted six different types this year, including two purple varieties. One of these has beautiful purple stems but hte folwers have yet to appear.
We transferred some chillis and peppers into the cold frame in April and these are all beginning to flower. Two years ago we had 200 hot chillis so we have high hopes this year. At the end of the coldframe we have five cucumber plants which are a bit yellow. It's a combination of poor soil and the transplanting I think.
The other end has tomato plants. We had great success on the plot last year with sub arctic plenty so have them again and they are flowering now.
Back at home we also have three other tomato varieties in grow bags.
The courgettes now have flowers and small fruit forming on the regular variety but we are waiting for the plants that we have grown from Italian seeds, Albenga squash, to get a little bigger. We have surrounded these with small pieces of corrugated plastic to provide shelter from the Dutch wind and to encourage heat. These mini fences also help to create a watering channel around the plants.
The shallots have recovered from a bit of yellowing to the leaves and avoided bolting so far. The onions didn't manage this with one or two victims to the fluctuating temperatures. We are keeping our fingers corssed as we lost a lot of them to the same problem.
The brand new cold frame is intended for the artichoke patch we are going to put it over them as soon as the weather eases off again. Last year we had two decent heads and the plants look to need more protection.
This weekend we should be planting our parsnip seedlings out. But we also have some sweet potatoes to put in and a car boot sale to go to....
